What Koko teaches
Curious Koko contains more than forty short lessons, each one dressed as a puzzle inside a themed world. This page lists all of them, the skill each one drills, and roughly the school year it suits β so you can tell at a glance whether the game is pitched at your child.

How the learning is structured
A quest is one lesson: a short run of questions on a single skill, two to four minutes long, ending in a score of one to three stars. A world is a themed group of two to four quests behind a single portal in the map β the Number Mines, the Story Grove, the House Library. A realm is a whole separate overworld with its own worlds inside it.
Progression is star-gated within a world but not across worlds. A child must earn stars in the first quest of the Number Mines before the second unlocks, so the arithmetic arrives in order; but nothing stops them walking away from maths entirely and spending the afternoon on rhyming words instead. This is intentional. A child who is allowed to choose the subject will do more of it.
Every quest also drops a crafting material β gems from the mines, leaves from the wilds, sparks from the ruins. Materials are spent at benches inside Koko's treehouse on furniture, pets and decorations, all of which then physically appear in her home. The reward for doing arithmetic is not a number going up; it is a hedgehog that follows you around the forest.

The forest is where every child starts. It holds the core primary-school skills.

A snowfield of frozen pines, reached through a travel portal. Four quests that the forest does not teach.
- Icicle Sizes β comparing numbers. Professor Puffin asks for the bigger icicle, then, without warning, the smaller one.
- Penguin Pairs β even and odd, introduced the way it should be: can every penguin find a skating partner, or is one left over?
- Melt & Freeze β states of matter. Sorting Willa the Fox's finds into solid, liquid and gas.
- Thermometer Trek β reading a scale, including below zero, which is most children's first meeting with negative numbers.
π Candy Cove
Lollipop trees and candy-cane paths. Two maths quests and two English ones.
- Candy Doubles β doubling and halving.
- Gumdrop Ruler β measuring length in repeated units with Inchy the Inchworm, the concrete step before a ruler makes sense.
- Syllable Sweets β clapping out syllables.
- Cupcake Parade β alphabetical order.

The seabed, entered by diving through a coral gate. Koko swims it in a dive mask. Grade 3 level throughout.

- Treasure Trail β skip counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 25s, forwards and backwards, which is much harder and much more useful.
- Who Eats Whom? β building reef food chains from sunlight up to shark.
- Sea Word Splice β compound words, with Ollie the Octopus splicing two small words into one big one.

A school realm modelled on the IB Primary Years approach: inquiry first, answer second.

Time is where grade 3 maths most often comes unstuck, because the numbers stop working in tens: 50 plus 25 is 75, but ten to ten plus twenty-five minutes is quarter past ten. The courtyard teaches it the way classrooms do β on an empty number line, with the o'clock marks as landmarks to bridge.
Chime's Clock Class β the part with no score at all
Before the quests there is a classroom, and it is the first of its kind in the game: no stars, no timer, no locked doors, nothing counted. Six boards, walked in order or dipped into whenever something stops making sense:
- Two hands, two speeds β watch a whole hour pass with both hands leaving trails, and see that one lap of the minute hand is exactly one number for the hour hand. This is what kills the classic misread of the hour hand sitting between two numbers.
- Sixty, not a hundred β pour two amounts of minutes into a box that holds exactly sixty and watch the spill become a whole hour. Everything else a child has learned swaps at ten; this is why time feels broken.
- Half past, quarter past, quarter to β the hour cut up like a cake, and the moment past the halfway mark where English stops counting past one hour and starts counting to the next.
- A moment, or a length? β the distinction the whole topic rests on. βHalf past threeβ is a place on the line; βhalf an hourβ is a distance along it. Six questions to sort, each explaining itself either way.
- Hop to the friendly o'clock β the strategy, stepped through one narrated hop at a time on the very number line the quests use.
- How long is that, really? β a live-ticking second, what each unit is enough time to actually do, and a ten-second challenge judged by feel alone.
Every check in the class answers back whichever way it is tapped, and nothing locks β a child who wants to try all four options to see what each one would have meant is doing exactly the right thing.
Then the quests
Every round, Chime the squirrel poses a school problem and the child builds the jump out of pieces: +1 hour, +30, +15, +10, +5. Each piece draws itself as a labelled arc on the line while the clock hands sweep to match, so the useful strategy β hop to the next o'clock first, then finish the minutes β is something they can see rather than something they are told. Nothing on screen prints the answer while they hop: where they land has to be read off the line or the clock face, and the wrong answers on offer are the mistakes children actually make, above all forgetting to carry the hour.
- Bell Tower Hops β the finish time, given the start and how long it lasts: adding time (grade 3).
- Rewind the Bell β the same line run backwards: you know when you must be there and how long it takes, so when do you start? Subtracting time (grade 3).
- Mind the Gap β both bells are shown; hop from one to the other and add up your own hops to measure the interval (grade 3).
The three are deliberately one exercise, not three: start, duration and end make a triangle, and each quest hides a different corner of it. A child who can bridge the o'clock in one recognises the picture in the other two.
Getting one wrong is not a buzzer. Each wrong answer on offer is a real mistake children make, and tapping it says why it is wrong β βyour minutes are right, but you crossed 10:00 on the wayβ. When the answer is found, the working stays on screen until the child taps on: their own hops replayed as a chain, the sum, and the reason the hour did what it did.
π Olympiad Arena β grade 3 exam practice
The most academically serious corner of the game, and the reason it exists. Two practice papers, sat with Professor Hoot and Miss Featherpen:
- Maths Olympiad β an eight-question paper drawn fresh each run from a bank covering the full grade 3 syllabus: number sense, reasoning, patterns, shapes, measurement and logical puzzles.
- English Olympiad β the same format for grammar, vocabulary, spelling and reading comprehension.
Two things make this different from the rest of the game. Questions are drawn across the whole syllabus each time, so no two runs are the same and a child cannot memorise their way through. And after every answer β right or wrong β the method is explained. A child who guesses correctly still gets told why the answer is what it is. The question banks are hand-checked and are added to regularly.
π« Oakridge MYP β the senior campus
The upper-primary realm, for children who have outgrown the forest.

- Angle Academy β naming and estimating acute, right, obtuse and reflex angles (grade 5).
- Prefix Prefects β prefixes and suffixes, building longer words from roots (grade 4).
- Punctuation Patrol β full stops, commas and apostrophes, one missing mark per sentence (grade 5).
The parts with no lessons in them
Roughly a third of Curious Koko teaches nothing at all, on purpose. A game that assesses a child every time they open it becomes homework, and children can smell homework.
- The Wardrobe Willow and its sister boutiques β a walk-in dress-up hub with sixty wearables, dye pots, photo backdrops and a polaroid camera. Koko wears whatever she is dressed in out into the forest.
- The Jungle Jim (chalk hopscotch and skipping rope), Sports Day Field (paper plane toss and tug of war), and the Tide Pool (bubble pop and pearl diving) β playgrounds that keep a best score for the visit and nothing more.
- Ferris Fields β a fairground with four stalls (hoopla, test-your-strength, hook-a-duck, coconut shy), a big wheel Koko can actually ride, and tickets that convert into building materials.
- Koko's treehouse β a walk-in first-person home with three rooms to furnish out of the materials earned elsewhere.
None of these award stars, and none affect progress. They are the reason a child comes back tomorrow.
Which ages it suits
Ages 6β7
The home forest is comfortable: addition, subtraction, rhyming, patterns, memory, habitats. Frostpeak and Candy Cove suit this band too. Most children this age will need a grown-up nearby for the first session, mainly to read a couple of instruction lines.
Ages 8β9
The sweet spot. All of the forest, all of Coral Deep, the PYP campus, and the grade 3 Olympiad papers. Multiplication, fractions, division, telling the time, adding and subtracting it, money and compound words all land in this band.
Ages 10β11
The MYP campus β decimals, angles, prefixes and suffixes, punctuation β plus the fairground and boutiques for the parts that are simply fun. Children at the top of this range will find the forest quests easy; that is fine, they finish quickly and unlock the crafting.
